Before mp3s, music video, FM radio, and even symphony orchestras, both classical and popular music was brought to US cities and towns by professional and community concert bands. Learn about the history of symphonic bands, their quirky traditions, and how they continue to keep music alive in our own time. Performed by the official band of San Francisco - the San Francisco Lesbian/Gay Freedom Band, conducted by Artistic Director Jadine Louie.
Music in the Gardens 101 is a series of narrated concerts that provides audiences a unique and invaluable opportunity to hear first-hand from master musicians about the music they perform, and their personal sources of inspiration. The series is designed to appeal as much to the musician and non-musician; as much to a grandparent as to a child.
Selections to be performed include:
Light Cavalry Overture by Franz Von Suppe
Colossus of Columbia by Russell Alexander
Early Light by Carolyn Bremer
Swing Low, Sweet Chariot by Steve Rouse
The Great Locomotive Chase by Robert W. Smith
Incidental Suite by Claude T. Smith
El Relicario by Jose Padilla
Yankee Doodle by Morton Gould
Sousa Portrait by Robert E. Foster
"Symphonic Band 101- It's Not Just for Marching Anymore" is the second installment of the 2006 Community Concert Series of the San Francisco Lesbian/Gay Freedom Band, the first openly GLBTIQQ music organization in the world and the Official Band of the City of San Francisco. Led by Artistic Director Jadine Louie, the San Francisco Lesbian/Gay Freedom Band is proud to be sponsored in part by a grant from the Grants for the Arts / San Francisco Hotel Tax Fund.
